FAQ’s
Will we be camping out the whole time? (ie. Will there be showers available?) No, although we will be camping for most of it. There is access to pay showers and there are bathrooms at the campground. We will also spend two nights at a hotel, including the last night so that you can be bathed and beautiful on your day of departure!
Can I bring my computer? No. Feel free to bring your cell phone, but don’t expect to use it much. Reception is sketchy at best from many locations on the island. Don’t bring a radio or any other electronic devices, including your electric toothbrush, J after all we are on an expedition!
What kind of gear do I need? We will be sending a detailed packing list once you are accepted on the project, but aside from a sleeping bag and hiking boots, most of the technical gear will be provided by Lifelines.
How physically intense is it, really? You should be able to comfortably carry a 20-pound pack for 4 miles as a pre-requisite. You will be expected to participate in each of the activities, which does not mean you need to have experience, but you need to have an adventuresome spirit. You will be physically tired. We will have one “break” day mid-project, but otherwise you will be daily challenged both physically and emotionally, which can be exhausting. However, the activities are also intended to be fun and spiritually rewarding!
How on earth do I get to Acadia National Park?
You could fly into Bangor,
you could fly into Portland and take a bus,
you could fly into Boston and take a bus
You have to be in Bangor by 4:00. We will provide a shuttle to the island, departing from the airport at 4:00.
Do I need prior experience in the outdoors?
No. Experienced guides will coach you through each activity providing instruction and safety. The activities themselves are not the focus of the project, they are our classroom for learning and experiencing Biblical life lessons. That being said, all of our training will be in the outdoors, so it will be more pleasurable for you if you take some degree of enjoyment from outdoor activities and have a certain level of fitness. See "How physically intense is it really?" above.
Are we the project for you?
Are you a Christian college student or on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ in any venue? Do you have a teachable spirit, a desire to live in authentic relationships, and an appreciation for the outdoors? If so, then this expedition may very well be for you. The expedition is emotionally intensive, and you will be expected to fully participate in and practice what you are learning. Our aim is to give you more than tools for ministering back on campus. We do not simply want to hone your skills, but to initiate true life change that will impact your walk with Christ, your decisions, and your relationships with the lost and the Body of Christ for a life time. If that is also your aim, we would love to have you.
How do I raise support?
This expedition is like many missionary trips in that you are expected to raise the full cost before reporting. The process of support raising can be a tremendous time for character growth, humility, perseverance, and faith. It is through support raising that we often see God’s provision in tangible ways and we experience the love and generosity of others. We will help guide you through this process and provide you with helpful materials to get you started.
How is the Acadia expedition different from other projects?
The Acadia Expedition is distinct.
- A ten day expedition allows students to have much of the summer off for work, vacation or summer classes
- Our focus is on character and leadership development: producing multiplying disciples of Christ, who want to see the world changed for Christ, recognizing that that change begins within that we might better reflect the light of Christ
- All of our training takes place in the outdoors, challenging students physically, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually
- Evangelism occurs as a product of right relating; the gospel is must be lived out for the benefit of both the Body and non-believer
- An all-women's project allows for greater intimacy, uniquely focusing on God's call to women, and may also mean working through more challenges - ultimately leading to deeper growth
